Casco Peak

13,905 ftColorado Centennials

Casco Peak sits on the long ridge south of Halfmoon Creek, west of Mount Elbert, a Centennial in the northern Sawatch that most people reach as the far end of a three-summit day with French Mountain and Frasco Benchmark. The terrain is classic Sawatch: grassy benches, broken talus, and ridgelines that look short on the map and run longer underfoot.

The usual combination starts at the Halfmoon Creek trailhead and follows an old mining road (high-clearance 4WD, with creek fords) past the Iron Mike Mine cabin ruins, then climbs grassy slopes to the French-Frasco saddle. After French and Frasco, the ridge to Casco is the slow part, with rocky bumps, careful Class 2 scrambling down to a saddle, and slabs and blocky boulders up to the summit outcrop. Plan on about 11.75 miles and 4,600 feet of gain round trip. A shorter southern line climbs Echo Canyon from Colorado 82 near the La Plata Peak trailhead and joins the southeast ridge, roughly 9 miles and 3,900 feet.

Elbert's broad western slopes fill the view to the east, and the ridge south toward Bull Hill invites longer outings. This is a long, exposed day on the crest, so start early and be off before afternoon storms. While spring snow lingers, the slopes carry avalanche risk and call for an ice axe.
