Conundrum Peak sits just north of Castle Peak in the Elk Mountains above Montezuma Basin, near Aspen. Though it has relatively modest prominence, it qualifies as a standalone Colorado 14er at 14,037 feet and is most often climbed together with Castle Peak as a double summit day.
The standard approach follows the South Ridge route from the Castle Creek drainage, covering 13.5 miles round trip with 4,400 feet of gain from the main trailhead, or roughly 7 miles and 2,900 feet from a 4WD parking area higher up the road. Rated Difficult Class 2, the route crosses scree fields and loose rock with enough exposure to make a helmet worth carrying. The crux is a steep slope below the Castle-Conundrum saddle at 13,800 feet, best tackled when stable snow remains to provide firmer footing. Above the saddle, the south ridge runs through broken rock and short ledges to a double summit; the true high point is the northern one. Plan to be off the summit by early afternoon, as thunderstorms build quickly over the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness in summer. Wilderness regulations apply throughout the approach and summit areas, covering group size, dispersed camping, and campfires.
