Handies Peak rises to 14,058 feet in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, roughly 13 miles southwest of Lake City in Hinsdale County. Its position gives the summit broad views of the surrounding volcanic terrain, including neighboring Redcloud and Sunshine to the east and the massive bulk of Uncompahgre to the north. The summit plateau is gentle by San Juan standards, with colorful banding in the rock reflecting layers of ancient welded tuff. Wildflower season in July transforms the approach basins into some of the finest high-altitude flower displays in Colorado.
Two established routes serve most hikers. The Southwest Slopes route from American Basin is a Class 1 walk and among the more accessible Colorado fourteeners: the trail climbs through the basin, curves south toward Sloan Lake, then switchbacks up the southwest slope to a saddle before following the ridge to the top, covering about 5.75 miles and 2,500 feet of gain. The East Slopes route via Grizzly Gulch is longer and more demanding at 8 miles and 3,650 feet of gain, a Class 2 ascent up Handies' north ridge with sustained effort and moderate rockfall exposure. Both trailheads require high-clearance or 4WD vehicles on County Road 30 out of Lake City.
Like all San Juan fourteeners, Handies sees fast-building afternoon thunderstorms from late June through August. Most parties aim to be off the exposed upper ridge by noon.
