Ice Mountain

Ice Mountain is the high point of the Three Apostles, the jagged trio (with North Apostle and West Apostle) that towers over the old mining site of Winfield in the heart of the Sawatch. In a range better known for rounded giants, the trio makes a sharp, forbidding skyline, and Ice is widely regarded as a serious objective rather than a walk-up. Its reputation also rests on the Refrigerator Couloir, a narrow snow line that spring skiers and climbers prize, with a steep pitch near the top that reaches roughly 55 degrees.

The standard combination route starts at the South Winfield trailhead (2WD for the lower lot, 4WD with good clearance to the upper one) and follows the Apostle Basin trail about 1.5 miles before it peters out near the creek below the peaks. From there it is a bushwhack to treeline, long stretches of talus to the North Apostle saddle, and a steep, exposed Class 3 gully just below the summit that serves as the crux. Figure about 9 miles and 3,500 feet, a little more with North Apostle. A similar northeast ridge line lists about 8.4 miles and 3,820 feet.

Rockfall is the main hazard, so helmets and small, spread-out parties are wise, and early-season snow in the gully can call for an axe and crampons. The summit view sweeps across this stretch of the Sawatch, down into Texas Creek and Waterloo Gulch and out toward Tincup.
