Red Mountain is the rubble-covered neighbor of Culebra Peak in the Culebra Range, in south central Colorado, about 15 miles southeast of San Luis. Both summits sit entirely on the private Cielo Vista Ranch, so there is no public trail and no public access. Every climb must be booked in advance through the ranch, which charges $150 per person, and one fee covers Culebra and Red together. The ranch currently opens climbing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from January through July and closes it from August through December for hunting season. Climbers must be at the headquarters gate by 6:00 AM, a 4WD or AWD vehicle with good clearance is needed for the ranch road, solo climbers are not allowed, and bookings are non-refundable except for ranch weather cancellations.
Nearly everyone reaches Red Mountain by first summiting Culebra. The route from Culebra drops south along a Class 2 ridge, skirts rocky spots, crosses a bump midway and descends to the saddle, then climbs Red's loose northwest slopes of scree, with some bits of path, to the top. From the upper 4WD trailhead the pair runs about 7 miles round trip with roughly 3,850 feet of gain; starting lower at the Four Way junction adds a couple of miles.
The terrain is tundra and talus with no real exposure, but the ridge is high and long, so start early and watch the sky.
