Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain rises to 4,020 feet along the Appalachian Trail in Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest, positioned on the Tennessee Valley Divide above Unicoi Gap near Helen. The AT crosses directly over the summit, making it a natural waypoint for day hikers and thru-hikers working through Georgia's 76-mile stretch of the trail.

The most direct approach departs from the Unicoi Gap trailhead on US-76, where the climb begins immediately and stays relentless for the roughly 1.2-mile ascent to the top. The route scrambles over lichen-covered boulders through a dense, fern-carpeted forest. The summit itself is wooded and offers no open panoramic views, but the forest rewards with tall wildflowers, rhododendron groves, and mountain laurel tunnels. A small campsite sits just off-trail near the top, and the Blue Mountain AT shelter lies about 2.15 miles from the gap, a popular stop for long-distance hikers.

Continuing southwest from the summit, the ridge descends through Henson Gap before rolling on toward Chattahoochee Gap, where a small spring marks the official headwaters of the Chattahoochee River. Spring and early summer bring abundant wildflower blooms across the route. The exposed ridge accumulates ice and snow from late November through early spring; microspikes or traction devices are advisable during cold-weather months.
