Double Knob (South Peak) rises to 4,020 feet in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Towns County, Georgia, just north of the Brasstown Bald massif. The peak is the lower of a two-summit ridge, with the higher Double Knob North holding the summit register; the South Peak sees far less traffic and demands more commitment to reach. The forested summit offers no open views, and the surrounding terrain is dense mixed hardwood with thick understory vegetation.
Reaching the summit requires off-trail navigation and should not be attempted without a GPS device. The most practical approach begins at the Jacks Knob Trailhead off GA 180, follows the Jacks Knob Trail north roughly two miles over South Wolfpen Ridge, then continues along the Wagon Train Trail northward for approximately 3.5 miles before leaving the trail for the final off-trail push to the highpoint. The bushwhack involves heavily vegetated terrain, and the true summit can be difficult to pinpoint without GPS.
Summer and early fall bring the densest undergrowth, making the off-trail portion especially slow. Late fall through early spring, when leaves are down, offers somewhat better visibility and navigation. Hunters use the national forest in fall, so blaze orange is advisable during deer season. This is a seldom-visited summit and a genuine challenge; it appeals primarily to those completing the Georgia Beyond 4000 list.
