Flat Top rises to 4,114 feet in the highlands of Rabun County, Georgia, within the Chattahoochee National Forest. Named for its characteristically leveled summit, the peak's rocky cliff face is one of the more recognizable features along the Bartram Trail, visible as hikers traverse the high ridgeline. The surrounding forest carries a rich mix of southern Appalachian hardwoods and heath, impressive during spring wildflower season and fall color.
The most direct approach passes through the Wilson Gap corridor via the Bartram Trail: Wilson Gap to Rabun Bald, an 8.5-mile moderate route that gains around 1,800 feet and can be combined with neighboring summits for a multi-peak day on the Georgia 4,000-footer list. Access via Darnell Creek Road is the shortest option but requires a high-clearance vehicle; parking is limited to roughly three cars. Backcountry camping is permitted within the national forest with no permit required, and small streams along the lower slopes provide water that must be filtered.
The high terrain here sees cooler temperatures and frequent afternoon thunderstorms in summer; early starts are advisable from June through August. Spring and fall offer the most stable conditions, with late April and May bringing wildflowers across the understory and clear sightlines from the exposed ridge sections above.
