Tickanetley Bald rises to 4,020 feet within the Rich Mountain Wilderness, a remote section of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Gilmer County just north of Ellijay. The summit sits roughly a mile from neighboring Rich Mountain, giving the peak minimal topographic prominence but a rewarding sense of deep wilderness. The forested summit holds no cleared views, but rewards those who reach it with genuine solitude in a lightly traveled corner of North Georgia's Blue Ridge.
Reaching Tickanetley Bald requires off-trail navigation throughout the final approach. The standard route follows Forest Service Road 338 for several miles before linking up with an abandoned roadbed toward Rich Mountain; from there, hikers bushwhack down to the saddle between the two summits, where remnants of an old road ease travel before the final push. The combined outing taking in Rich Mountain, Tickanetley, and Big Bald covers roughly 13 miles with about 2,800 feet of gain. Navigation tools are essential throughout, as cell service is unreliable and trail markings are scarce.
The wilderness supports populations of deer, black bears, turkey, and grouse. Hunting is a significant use of the area, particularly in fall and early winter, so hikers should wear bright, high-visibility clothing during those seasons. The name Tickanetley reflects the area's Cherokee heritage; signs along the approach trail ask visitors to leave any cultural artifacts in place.
