Baldpate Mountain sits at the northeast end of the Mahoosuc Range within Grafton Notch State Park, facing Old Speck across Route 26 in Oxford County. The mountain has two summits connected by a short, boggy col: West Peak and the higher East Peak at 3,780 feet. Both summits are open ledge, a feature that makes the approach visible from below and gives the tops genuine spaciousness, with views sweeping across the western Maine highlands and into New Hampshire.
The standard route follows the Appalachian Trail north from the Route 26 trailhead, gaining roughly 2,900 feet over about 3.8 miles to the summit. The lower miles pass junctions for Table Rock and a lean-to shelter at around 2.5 miles, then steepen sharply through progressively shorter conifers as the trail climbs toward West Peak. Open ledge on West Peak rewards with long western views; a short descent aided by a wooden ladder drops into the col before a final push up exposed rock to East Peak's long, flat crown and summit cairn.
A less-traveled northern approach uses the Cataracts Trail from Andover/East B Road, passing scenic gorges and swimming holes at Frye Brook before joining the AT to the summit. The open summits are exposed to high winds and can be icy well into spring; the rock is slippery when wet in any season.
