East Kennebago Mountain (3,791 ft) sits in remote Franklin County timberland between Rangeley and Stratton, part of an informal cluster of six unmarked summits around Rangeley sometimes called "the six pack" among hikers working through the New England 100 Highest list. The mountain has no developed trail and no summit views, yet it draws steady traffic from peak-baggers willing to navigate its unmarked approach.
The route begins on ATV and logging roads off Route 16, gaining ground gradually with occasional open views across the surrounding forested hills and lake country. After a flat wooded stretch, a cairn and yellow stake mark a narrow herd path that climbs steeply for roughly 0.7 miles to the top. The path is easy to follow despite being unblazed. Total round-trip distance varies with how far vehicles can penetrate the rough access roads, but plan on 8 to 10 miles with around 1,300 feet of elevation gain; a high-clearance vehicle makes a meaningful difference in reducing the walking distance. The wooded summit is marked with a register canister and sign. Views are absent at the top, though there are occasional sightlines through the trees on the final ascent. The logging roads can be deeply rutted, and snow typically lingers into May. Summer and fall offer the most reliable access conditions.
