Goose Eye Mountain rises to 3,870 feet in Oxford County, Maine, sitting about a mile east of the New Hampshire border as the second-highest peak of the Mahoosuc Range. The mountain has multiple summits, with a North Peak at 3,675 feet connected via the Appalachian Trail, which meets the Goose Eye Trail just east of the main summit. The west summit offers expansive views in all directions across the rugged Mahoosuc terrain.
The Wright Trail is the most popular approach, running approximately 4.5 miles one way from a trailhead on Bull Branch Road. The first two and a half miles follow Goose Eye Brook through quiet forest, passing cascades and deep swimming pools before reaching a backcountry campsite. Beyond the campsite a brook crossing leads to steep, sustained climbing. At 3.1 miles the trail breaks above treeline onto a dramatic and fully exposed ridge where wind can hit hard with little to break its force; a short dip back into forest precedes the final push to the summit. The Goose Eye Trail and Carlo Col Trail offer an alternative loop approach through the heart of the Mahoosucs, taking in nearby Mount Carlo.
The above-treeline sections and steep slabs on both the Wright Trail and Goose Eye Trail demand caution in wet or icy conditions. Snow can linger well into spring, and the ridge is notably exposed to rapid weather changes year-round. The trail can be muddy, particularly along the upper ridge during the wet season.
