North Brother rises to 4,151 feet in Baxter State Park, the northernmost of the New England 4,000-footers and part of a compact ridge known as The Brothers. South Brother (3,960 ft) and Mount Coe (3,784 ft) share the massif, and the east flank drops into the Klondike, a wild, boggy basin draining through Wassataquoik Stream to the East Branch Penobscot. Katahdin's summit, where the Appalachian Trail reaches its northern terminus, stands just five miles to the southeast.
The main route is the Marston Trail, accessed from near Slide Dam on the park's Tote Road, covering roughly 7.9 miles out-and-back with about 2,920 feet of gain. The trail begins flat along a brook, then climbs in alternating steep and gentler stretches, passing Teardrop Pond at around 2.1 miles. The final 0.8 miles to the summit involves eroded gullies, tangled roots, and large boulders, the roughest terrain on the route. A popular extension links North Brother to South Brother and Mount Coe on a roughly 10-mile loop; park rangers recommend running this counter-clockwise to ascend Coe's near-vertical rock slide before traversing to The Brothers.
The summit is broad, open, and boulder-strewn, with wide views across Baxter's remote interior and directly into Katahdin's western face. Weather at this remote northern station can deteriorate quickly; advance campsite and day-use reservations are required for entry to the park.
