Old Speck Mountain rises to 4,170 feet as the highest and northeasternmost peak of the Mahoosuc Range, which forms the northeastern extension of the White Mountains. Sitting on the southern boundary of Grafton Notch State Park and facing Baldpate Mountain across the notch, it is the only Maine summit on the AMC White Mountain 4000 Footers list. The summit itself is wooded, but an old fire tower provides sweeping 360-degree views across western Maine and into New Hampshire.
The standard out-and-back from Grafton Notch follows the white-blazed Appalachian Trail south, tracking Cascade Brook through dense softwood forest before ascending the north shoulder. At roughly the 3.5-mile mark, a 0.3-mile spur leads to the summit; the full trip covers about 7.6 miles with around 2,700 feet of gain. For a shorter alternative, the Eyebrow Loop branches off near the trailhead and climbs via ladders and iron rungs to a dramatic 2,900-foot overlook on Old Speck's flank, returning via the AT.
Speck Pond, at 3,400 feet on the mountain's shoulder, is one of Maine's highest ponds and is stocked with brook trout. The mountain sees heavy icing in the shoulder seasons, and the upper trail can remain snow-covered well into May; summer through early fall offers the most reliable conditions.
