Snow Mountain rises to 3,960 feet in far northwestern Maine, about five miles south of the Quebec border near the Chain of Ponds watershed. Its prominence of 2,329 feet gives it a commanding presence above the surrounding boreal terrain, and its place on the New England Hundred Highest draws peak-baggers to this remote corner of Franklin County despite the lack of 4,000-foot status.
The standard approach follows an old fire warden's path, covering roughly 7.7 miles round trip with about 2,155 feet of gain. ATV traffic in the area keeps the lower trail well-worn, though the branching network of ATV tracks can be confusing before the route settles into its sustained climb to the summit. Blowdowns and slippery rocks are common obstacles, making sturdy footwear worthwhile.
The forested summit holds a deteriorating fire tower; climbing it opens panoramic views north into Quebec and across the lakes and ridges of western Maine, with Chain of Ponds visible below to the north. The access road is long and rough, and the wet, cold climate of this corner of Maine means extra layers are useful even in summer. An early start helps avoid navigating the slow, obstacle-prone trail in fading light.
