Spaulding Mountain rises to 4,010 feet in Franklin County, Maine, flanked by Sugarloaf Mountain to the northeast and Mount Abraham to the southeast. The Appalachian Trail traverses the high ridge between these peaks, passing 150 feet below the summit; a short 0.1-mile blue-blazed spur branches off to reach the wooded top. A path running north from the summit leads to a partial view of Sugarloaf. The surrounding terrain drains into Rapid Stream and the Carrabassett River watershed, and the ridge walk through boreal forest is rewarding even if the summit clearing is modest.
Two main routes reach Spaulding. From Caribou Pond Road the AT climbs steeply up Sugarloaf's flank before settling into the connecting ridgeline; from the Sugarloaf junction it's another 2.1 miles to the Spaulding spur, with a short detour available to a viewpoint toward Mount Abraham along the way. This approach runs roughly five miles one way. Approaching via Mount Abraham adds significant mileage but rewards with Abraham's sweeping open summit before the trail descends west to the AT and turns north to Spaulding.
Snow often persists on the upper ridge into May. Caribou Pond Road, the main trailhead access for the shorter approach, is a rough dirt road best suited to high-clearance vehicles. Checking current trail and road conditions before the drive out is well worth the effort.
