Eastman Mountain sits in the Evans Notch corridor on the Maine-New Hampshire border, a quieter corner of the White Mountains that sees far less traffic than the better-known notches to the west. At 2,938 feet, the summit falls below treeline, but a clearing at the top opens views toward South Baldface, the broader White Mountains to the southwest, and across the border into Maine. On clear days, Mount Washington is visible above the intervening ridgeline.
The standard approach follows Emerald Pool Trail into Slippery Brook Trail and then the Eastman Mountain Trail, a roughly 8.2-mile round trip with about 2,600 feet of gain. The first half is gentle, winding through forest with a series of brook crossings; most are straightforward, though one can require careful rock-hopping after significant rainfall. The gradient steepens in the final mile and a half, and the last push to the top involves some rocky scrambling through moss-covered forest that gives the Eastman Mountain Trail its particularly lush character.
The trailhead shares a parking area with the popular Baldface Loop, which means the lot fills early on summer weekends. Hikers heading to Eastman typically find far more solitude than those bound for the Baldfaces. Snow lingers on the upper trail into late spring, and the brook crossings can run high during snowmelt. The summit clearing is open enough to catch wind, so an extra layer is useful even in warmer months.
