West Field is a trailless summit on the western end of the Willey Range, sitting roughly a mile west of Mount Field at 3,691 feet. The standard approach begins at Crawford Notch, following the Avalon Trail and then the A-Z Trail to within about a mile of the summit before leaving maintained trails behind. The full round trip runs approximately 8 miles with 2,600 feet of elevation gain and generally takes most of a day.
The bushwhack departs the A-Z Trail and hugs the 3,500-foot contour across to the Field-West Field col before ascending to the summit. The forest along this route is largely open and pleasant, with boreal spruce and fir providing good footing for most of the way, tightening into denser growth just below the top. A summit register marks the high point, and gray jays occasionally drop in as company. On the western slope, a pair of remote ponds reward those willing to explore; the larger southern pond is a genuine backcountry find.
Reaching the summit requires off-trail navigation for the final mile, making map, compass, and GPS essential. Substantial snowpack can linger on this sheltered ridge into spring, and snowshoes are often useful past the col. Zealand Road, which provides western access to the A-Z Trail, closes seasonally, so verify road status before planning a winter approach from that direction.
