Hibbard Mountain (2,940 ft) sits on the Wonalancet Range within the Sandwich Range Wilderness, a quiet and lightly traveled pocket of the White Mountain National Forest south of the main Presidential-Franconia corridor. The summit is thickly forested, but a short unmarked spur near the top leads to the edge of a small cliff with views of the Ossipee Range spread across the south and the distant Belknap Range on the horizon. The approach passes through the Bowl Research Natural Area, a protected old-growth forest of hemlock and northern hardwoods.
The most popular route links the Wonalancet Range Trail with Old Mast Road for a roughly 6-mile loop with around 2,200 feet of elevation gain. The Old Mast Road section provides a moderate woodland climb, while the upper Wonalancet Range Trail steepens before reaching the summit ridge. Most hikers combine Hibbard with Mount Wonalancet on the same outing; the two summits sit close together on the ridge and share the trailhead on Ferncroft Road. Trail markings can be sparse in places, and the area's remoteness means fewer hikers than on nearby Passaconaway or Chocorua.
The lower elevation means the trail sheds snow earlier in spring than the higher peaks, making March and April viable when other White Mountain routes are still buried. Fall color on the hardwood slopes is a particular draw in mid-October.
