Mount Hight, at 4,675 feet, sits on the Carter-Moriah Range in the White Mountains east of Pinkham Notch, just north of Carter Dome. Although it ranks as a sub-peak of Carter Dome with only about 125 feet of topographic prominence above the connecting col, it is widely regarded as the finest viewpoint in the Carter Range. The open, rocky summit hosts a small alpine zone, something the neighboring and taller Carter Dome lacks entirely, and the panorama extends from the Presidentials to the Wild River Wilderness.
The standard approach follows the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail from Route 16, combined with the Carter Dome and Carter-Moriah trails in a loop of about 8.9 miles and 3,150 feet of elevation gain. From the summit, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and Madison line the western horizon; to the east, the view sweeps across the Wild River Wilderness and the distinctive Baldface peaks. Most parties combine Hight with Carter Dome on the same outing, making the short connector ridge between them a natural part of any Carter Range traverse.
The final push to the summit is steep, emerging onto open rock just below the top. Snow lingers on the upper trail into May, and the exposed summit calls for wind layers even on warm summer days. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, making an early start advisable.
