Mount Israel

Mount Israel rises to 2,636 feet at the southern edge of the Sandwich Range, positioned just four miles north of Squam Lake and offering views that punch well above its modest elevation. The small, open summit looks south across the lake and north toward the broad ridgeline of Mount Sandwich, with the higher White Mountains stacked behind. In the other direction, Stinson Mountain, Mount Carr, and the Campton Range hills fill out the panorama, making this one of the more rewarding viewpoints in the Lakes Region.

The Wentworth Trail is the primary route, a 4-mile round trip with roughly 1,750 feet of elevation gain from the Mead Base trailhead at the end of Diamond Ledge Road. The climb is steady throughout, picking up the sound of a small creek early on before switchbacking around a rocky cliff section. The grade eases in the final half-mile, where a false summit with its own open views precedes the true top. The less-traveled Guinea Pond and Mead Trail approach from Sandwich Notch Road adds several miles and passes alongside Guinea Pond; portions of this route are subject to seasonal flooding from beaver activity, and the road itself closes in winter.

Ticks are a significant concern in the surrounding forest, making late fall or early spring visits preferable to midsummer. The trail to the summit is straightforward and well-marked throughout.
