Rand Mountain sits in the central Belknap Range at 1,883 feet, one of a cluster of low, wooded summits west of Lake Winnipesaukee. The summit is forested with no open views, marked by a wooden sign; a brief detour 0.1 mile past the high point leads to a fine outlook south, and the trail traverses more varied terrain than the summit alone suggests.
The primary route is the Dave Roberts' Quarry Trail, a white-blazed ridge traverse linking Straightback Mountain to Mt. Klem. Most hikers approach from the Klem end, adding Rand as a 0.6-mile side trip via trails from the Round Pond area. The path crosses a narrow col, then climbs steeply with a short scramble and switchbacks along a rocky, precarious stretch before reaching the signed summit. The broader Quarry Trail traverse toward Straightback adds West and East Quarry Mountains, an old-growth spruce forest with notably large trees, and an historic quarry site.
Rand is one of twelve peaks required for the Belknap Range Hiker patch, and it lies along the more scenic alternate route of the Belknap Range Trail, which skips Mt. Mack and Mt. Anna in favor of this eastern cluster. Steep pitches hold snow into spring, and the sloping ledges west of the summit can be hazardous when wet.
