Sable Mountain sits at 3,510 feet in Chatham, in the shadow of South Baldface and Eastman Mountain within the White Mountain National Forest. Reaching the summit requires off-trail navigation through dense forest, as cliff bands ring the peak and leave only a few viable lines to the top. The wooded summit offers limited directional views. The peak appears on the NH 100 Highest and NH 3000-Footers lists, drawing peak-baggers working those rosters.
The standard approach follows the Slippery Brook Trail before branching off on a bushwhack to the summit. A full circuit combining Sable with neighboring Chandler Mountain covers roughly 8 miles with around 1,800 feet of elevation gain, and the two are routinely paired in a single outing. Sable's cliff-ringed terrain makes navigation more demanding than its modest elevation implies; careful route-finding is essential, particularly on descent.
