South Kinsman (4,356 ft) is the higher of the two Kinsman summits and the taller anchor of Kinsman Ridge, a long spine running along the western edge of Franconia Notch. The summit is broad and open, with krummholtz scrub framing views toward the Pemigewasset Wilderness to the east and the ridge stretching north toward North Kinsman and Cannon Mountain. A short walk past the main high point expands the panorama closer to a full circle. Kinsman Pond, a small tarn just below the summit ridge, makes a natural stopping point and hosts an AMC backcountry campsite with a caretaker in summer.
The most popular approach loops via Lonesome Lake and the Fishin' Jimmy Trail, covering roughly 10 miles with about 3,500 feet of elevation gain. The Fishin' Jimmy Trail climbs steeply on rough, rooted terrain with occasional wooden steps before emerging at Kinsman Pond and the ridge. Most hikers continue over both peaks; a mile of rocky scrambling connects South and North Kinsman along the Kinsman Ridge Trail. Trailhead parking at Lafayette Place in Franconia Notch fills early on weekends.
The summit sits high enough to catch fast-moving weather; afternoon thunderstorms build quickly in summer, and snow is possible from October through May. The open summit area also catches wind, so an extra layer is advisable even in warmer months.
