Terrace Mountain sits at 3,665 feet in the remote Kilkenny district of northern New Hampshire, a quiet corner of the White Mountain National Forest above Berlin. Its upper slopes open onto a grassy summit area with excellent views south to the Presidential Range and east toward the Weeks Range, among the better vistas in the Kilkenny for the effort involved.
The standard approach follows the York Pond Trail, which begins near the York Pond Fish Hatchery on York Pond Road and gains roughly 2,000 feet before reaching Willard Notch, where it meets the Kilkenny Ridge Trail. From the notch, a spur trail heads north toward Terrace Mountain, but this section is lightly blazed and prone to blowdown; careful navigation through open hardwood forest is required, and many hikers find themselves improvising through the final approach.
Traffic here is minimal in any season. The fish hatchery access gates are typically open only during daylight hours in summer, making an early start advisable. Snow lingers in Willard Notch and on the upper slopes well into spring, when the lightly marked spur trail can become harder still to follow.
