Mount Tom rises to 4,048 feet as the northernmost summit in the Willey Range, a trio of peaks — Tom, Field, and Willey — that stands above the west side of Crawford Notch. The standard approach follows the A-Z Trail from Crawford Depot on Route 302, a route that crosses several brooks and passes small waterfalls on its way to the ridge. Views from Tom's summit open south and east toward the notch below.

The summit links by a short ridge walk to Mount Field, and continuing to Mount Willey along the Willey Range Trail makes the full traverse roughly 10 miles round trip from the Crawford trailhead. Adding nearby Mount Avalon extends the loop further, with rewarding views from Avalon's open ledges. The AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch sits near the trailhead and offers lodging, meals, and trail information. Parking is available at the Crawford Depot lot for a small fee.
