West Bond stands at 4,518 feet at the heart of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, making it one of the most remote summits on the New Hampshire 4,000-footer list. Its compact, treeless knob commands a full 360-degree panorama: Bondcliff and Mount Bond rise to the east and south, Hellgate Ravine drops away below, Owl's Head fills the western view, and the back side of Franconia Ridge defines the horizon. Few summits in the White Mountains offer such an unobstructed window into the wilderness interior.
Reaching West Bond demands a serious commitment; all practical routes cover 18 to 20 miles round trip with around 4,800 feet of gain. The most common approach starts at Lincoln Woods on the Kancamagus Highway and follows the flat, railroad-grade Lincoln Woods Trail before turning onto the Bondcliff Trail for a steep climb to the high ridge. From the north, the Zealand Bonds Traverse winds through Zealand Notch for a more varied route. Either way, the final 0.5-mile West Bond Spur branches off near Mount Bond and ends at the exposed summit knob. Many parties split the miles with a night at the AMC Galehead or Zealand Falls Hut.
Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly above treeline in summer; early starts are essential. The approach trail can hold snow into May.
