Big Jay

Big Jay rises to 3,786 feet in Vermont's northern Green Mountains, sitting about a mile west of its taller neighbor along the Jay Range. The Franklin County highpoint, it ranks among Vermont's thirteen tallest summits and counts toward the New England Hundred Highest, giving it outsized significance despite its modest footprint.

There is no maintained trail to the summit. The standard approach follows the Long Trail from VT Route 242, climbing Jay Peak first, then joining a herd path that branches off the Long Trail just below the Jay summit on its north side. The round trip covers roughly 5.5 to 6.3 miles with around 2,500 feet of gain. The herd path is generally well-worn but can be overgrown with low spruce and brush; long pants and trekking poles help push through the denser sections. A detailed route map downloaded in advance is worth having on trail since the path can be hard to follow in a few spots.

The summit itself opens up with views over the surrounding ridgelines and valleys of northern Vermont and southern Quebec. A summit register lets visitors log their ascent. Snow and ice linger well into spring on the north-facing herd path, so traction devices are worth carrying through late May.
