The Airline earns its place on the Terrifying 25 through a combination of relentless exposure, technical route-finding, and the severe weather that defines the northern Presidential Range. Running approximately 3.7 miles along Durand Ridge to the summit of Mt. Adams (5,774 ft, second-highest in New England), the trail gains around 4,500 feet with little reprieve. The lower section follows forested terrain at a steady grade before breaking above treeline around 4,300 feet, where the ridge opens completely to the wind.
The upper section traverses the Knife Edge, a narrow ledgy crest perched above the glacially carved cirque of King Ravine. The drop into the ravine on the western side is sharp, and gusts routinely reach dangerous speeds across this exposed spine. Above the Knife Edge, the trail crosses the Gulfside Trail and climbs the summit cone via a trackless boulder field that resembles a lunar landscape; cairns mark the route, but in poor visibility or snow, navigation becomes genuinely difficult and the correct line is not always clear.
Conditions above treeline can deteriorate rapidly at any time of year. Snow and ice linger on the summit cone and north-facing terrain well into spring, and microspikes or crampons are often necessary through May or June. Despite being the most direct route to Adams from the north, the Airline demands full alpine preparedness.
