Osseo Trail

The Osseo Trail is the most approachable entry on the Terrifying 25, a good first step for hikers building up to what the list demands. Starting 1.4 miles in on the Lincoln Woods Trail off the Kancamagus Highway, it climbs roughly 3,000 feet over 3.6 miles to a junction with the Franconia Ridge Trail just below Mt. Flume's 4,328-foot summit. The early miles through forest gain elevation gently, with switchbacks and rock staircases keeping the grade manageable as terrain gradually steepens.

The trail's signature feature is a series of wooden ladders on the steepest pitches near treeline. Well-constructed and considered the most stable fixed structures of their kind in the White Mountains, they are nonetheless near-vertical and demand confident footing. Wet rungs become slippery quickly; in winter the ladder section requires crampons and careful technique. Above the ladders the ridge opens to broad views across the Pemigewasset Wilderness, and Mt. Flume's summit lies 0.1 miles beyond the trail terminus on the Franconia Ridge Trail.

The full round trip, including the flat Lincoln Woods approach, covers around 10 miles and takes most parties 6 to 7 hours. Summer and fall are the most forgiving seasons; early spring brings ice melt hazards in the ladder section and on north-facing terrain near the top. If this trail feels at or near your limit, expect the rest of the Terrifying 25 to be considerably more demanding.
