Eagle Mountain

Eagle has no marked trail of its own, yet the climb is tamer than the trailless label suggests. The Pine Hill-West Branch Trail passes close by, and a short unmarked side path, about 250 feet by one trip report, leads to the canister that marks the true summit. The top is so flat that it is hard to tell when the high point has arrived. There is no view, so the payoff here is the register and quiet woods.

The Dry Brook approach from the Seager parking area runs 8.4 miles round trip on single-track. The first 2.1 miles cross private land, so stay on the trail. A DEC lean-to near Shandaken Brook makes a handy landmark on the way in. The parking area is plowed in winter, which keeps the peak reachable on snowshoes. For a bigger day, Eagle and Haynes via Rider Hollow is listed at 7.5 miles with 2,106 feet of gain, and the herd path to Eagle on that side was reported as barely used.

The mountain sits inside the Big Indian Wilderness, with Big Indian Mountain to the southeast. Its east and northeast slopes shed water into Esopus Creek, while the rest drains through Dry Brook toward the East Branch Delaware. A supposed plane wreck somewhere on the mountain has not been found.
