Indian Head Mountain

Indian Head is the first summit most hikers meet on the eastern Devil's Path, and it sets the tone early. From the DEC lot on Prediger Road, the standard route follows the Jimmy Dolan Notch trail system, with conifers, exposed roots, and mud after rain. A narrow ledge borders a steep drop, and a famous root-ladder descent has hikers gripping tree roots along a cliff face. A tight rock cleft nearby forces hikers to duck under a fallen trunk, a tree that came down in 2013.

The top itself is a letdown for photographers, since the summit has no view; balsam fir dominates it. Better views sit close by. Sherman's Lookout frames neighboring peaks, including Plattekill, and a lower ledge looks across the valley toward the Bruderhof. Morning is the best time to go. Rock scrambles come from both directions, so leave time for them.

The mountain lies within the Indian Head Wilderness, home to deer, black bears, bobcats, coyotes, and fishers. Camping above 3,500 feet is prohibited there from March 21 to December 21, so plan a day hike. Hikers who want more Devil's Path can continue west to Twin through Jimmy Dolan Notch.
