Vly Mountain

Vly is a bushwhack above the end of Route 3 south of Fleischmanns, usually paired with Bearpen. A route account puts the combined trip at 6.51 miles, with 1,253 feet of climbing to Vly and 756 more to Bearpen. The route follows the unpaved road about a mile to a pass with a hunter's cabin, then an unofficial blue-blazed path leaves the right side near a DEC sign. The Vly and Bearpen route is a common way to bag both.

Parking needs care. Parking is tight: use only the east side of Route 3 before the snowplow turnaround, which is private and must stay clear for emergency vehicles year-round, and carpool. Respect private property near the parking and along much of the way.

Vly has no maintained trail, with a herd path from the col with Bearpen leading to a canister on top. The summit itself has no view. A limited look at Bearpen opens about three quarters of the way up, and only with the leaves down. The mountain lies in the town of Halcott, Greene County, and some old cars sit in the woods near the bottom of the trail from the hunter's cabin.
