Windham High Peak is the northernmost summit on the Escarpment Trail. The Elm Ridge route is 5.89 miles round trip with 1,444 feet of gain, starting on the 0.9-mile yellow-blazed Elm Ridge Trail from Peck Road and joining the blue-blazed Escarpment Trail near a lean-to. The longer approach on the Escarpment Trail is 7 miles with 1,751 feet of gain.

Views are the draw here, with great outlooks north and south from several viewpoints along the summit ridge. The Long Path shares the tread through this stretch, and the trail is contiguous with the Escarpment Trail there. The summit once marked a traditional tripoint between Mohawk, Mohican and Delaware territory, at least until 1629. Its slopes feed the Batavia Kill, Bowery Creek and Plattekill Creek.

The Escarpment Trail also leads toward Burnt Knob, and hikers who are heading for Blackhead follow the same blue blazes from the summit area too. The mountain lies in the Windham-Blackhead Range Wilderness, where camping above 3,500 feet is prohibited from March 21 to December 21.
