North Dome has no marked trail, and its summit is a viewless knob under dense balsam fir with a club canister. The preferred approaches use the Devil's Path or Shaft Road, and it is often paired with Sherrill Mountain. One long-day version of that traverse starts at the Spruceton Trail parking area, follows the Devil's Path over West Kill and St. Anne's Peak, leaves the trail for the bushwhack over North Dome and Sherrill, and ends on Shaft Road, roughly 12 miles in all. That means a shuttle or a second car.
The ground linking the two summits is often wet and muddy. Taking the Devil's Path means the West Kill Mountain climb comes first, and Mink Hollow separates that peak from this one.
Private land borders the mountain, especially to the north. Be aware of and respect private property boundaries there. Guided club hikes have covered this route, one described as a moderate-paced bushwhack with steep climbs. Sherrill, the next summit, honors Colonel Eliakim Sherrill, a Shandaken resident, state senator and Union brigade commander, and a vista opens just south of its canister.
