Sherrill Mountain

Sherrill has no marked trail, so a little map skill comes in handy. The club's preferred approaches are the Shaft Road route, or a pairing with North Dome along the Devil's Path. A club-led out-and-back from Shaft Road covers both summits in 7 miles with 1,877 feet of ascent.

A solo trip report describes a creek crossing to start, then mostly open woods with old stone walls and a scattering of thickets and blowdowns. Thicker brush and brambles show up around 2.5 miles in, near 3,400 feet. The climb alternates between moderate and steep pitches with some rock and small cliffs, and a small cave sits along the way. The ridge is broad for much of the ascent but well defined.

The summit is wooded and has no view, though the vista south of the canister opens up a little. The peak is named for Eliakim Sherrill, a Shandaken resident who served as a state senator and a Union brigade commander, and it sits on public land in the West Kill Mountain Wilderness.
